STEALING CHAPLIN
WRITTEN BY DOUG PHILLIPS/STORY BY SIMON PHILLIPS
DIRECTED BY PAUL TANTER
SYNOPSIS: Two brothers plot to steal the body of Charlie Chaplin and ransom it for a fortune.
WHAT THIS FILM DOES WELL: First and foremost it should make you smile, chuckle and hopefully even laugh out loud. There is a moment in here for everyone and every type of humor and even dare I say a little warmth where you end up cheering for certain thing srathe rather get bogged down by them. The cast is stellar, Doug and Simon's chemistry is in kin to Laurel and Hardy (they probably say more like Affleck and Damon, what you can't see the resembence?), and the supporting roles, starting with Al Sapienza and Bianca Katz (who is a star in the making) are off the charts. The camerawork and cuts are on point and give you just what you need at the moments you need them. This is also one of the best uses of a Las Vegas we don't always get to see in film too. Paul Tanter is a talented director and you would hate to saddle him with the herding (watch our interview for that insight) duties but if all three don't do more Cal and Terry Adventures, I would hope we see Simon and Doug do more in the future as "brothers"at least.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHAMPION THIS FILM: Stealing Chaplin is the comedic caper movie you didn't know you needed in your life. What starts as a laugh out loud, absurdity morphs into a cool Tarratino-esque romp that crescendos with one of the most satisfying and paid off endings of 2021.
IF YOU WERE A FAN OF: Jackie Brown, The Hangover, and Seven Psychopaths
