FILMAGE: THE STORY OF DESCENDENTS/ALL

(DOCUMENTARY)

WRITTEN CO-DIRECTED BY MATT RIGGLE & CO-DIRECTED BY DEEDLE LACOUR

STARRING: BILL STEVENSON, MILO AUCKERMAN, KARL ALVAREZ, STEPHEN EGERTON

SYNOPSIS:
Long before punk inflicted its puncture wound on the mainstream, the Descendents were in a van brewing a potent concoction of pop, angst, love and coffee.

WHAT THIS FILM DOES WELL: Well first and foremost if you don't know who the Descendents are or what they pioneered then this film will definitely educate you there. It also does a great job of talking about how they transitioned into ALL once Milo left the group, something that doesn't get as talked about in the punk rock circles as it should. This film is surprisingly more than candid, it actually has a great narrative tone to it that tells a story that is foundational in storytelling itself and kind of goes with telling a story that has an ending and meaning and will leave you feeling something concrete not abstract like documentaries tend to do. Also you have to aspect if you are a punk rock fan, not only does is the music just plain awesome and used well, but the list of punk rock dignitaries and royalty that get interviewed and talk about their love for this band is amazing.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHAMPION THIS FILM: In the grand scheme of it ALL (yes, a pun) this a film made by a couple musicians who are super fans of a band. That is a great reason to make a movie, a documentary and that needs to be championed more than anything. Passion for subjects and social conscience is great documentary starting platforms but sometimes you need a movie that celebrates a love for something that may not be so earth-shattering that you are affected by it to the nth degree. That being said, maybe this kind of love too will get you to be a fan of something you weren't a fan of going n whether it because of bias or stigma or whatever, maybe you just never heard Descendents before, and when you do maybe you wished you had. That's the beauty of making a movie about something you love too, your love is contagious.
