Slivers & Shards is an eclectic look at his heart and soul in the years that came after the poet's world was somehow starting to be put back together again.
WHAT THIS COLLECTION DOES WELL: First I am a big fan of Books 1 & 2, 2 especially, it was one of my favorites of 2020. I love the subtle callbacks in this one. It's cool when a poet treats you to a narrative experience and does so over not just one book but several. Kind of even cooler Book 3 kind starts like a Prologue with "Afar" and jettisons right into a narrative that will tug at your heart strings, renew some faith in love, and just out and out stick with you all in one big swoop. Edd Sowder is so good at arrangements and weaving an intricate story and giving context that becomes this linear exploration of observation and the deepest reaches of one's soul. I will say the longer prose is tough at times because it can lose its way a little. That being said some of these stretches are pure magic and just so insightful, honest, and pure. It's what separates Sowder for me from my other favorites. He opens up and when he does its direct, precise, and really beautiful. "And..." is my favorite offering in this collection.
WHY YOU SHOULD CHAMPION THIS COLLECTION: I am pretty sure I said this after Book 2 but this book needs to be hugged and absorbed because its real, its pure, and bares its soul like a man should be allowed to do, should dare to do. Fuck what society or expectations or stereotypes warrant, this book is so true in its essence for meaning. Books like this need to be read, need to be cherished, and should really be praised more.
