WHAT THIS ALBUM DOES WELL: I am not sure rhythmically I have heard a better album this year. Its bold while still holding true to a band that has been around and knows who they are. Delta Sleep has been doing this for the better part of a decade but this is an album, the first on their own label that shows how well they know themselves. It is introspective without being too brash or over cynical and the music accompaniments really hone in on a better sense of self because you feel guided not preached at, you feel comforted not forced somewhere. The Detail is certainly a candidate for one of my songs of the year, it's so invigorating and the chorus is catchy. The Softest touch is another really strong song on the album for me. All 12 songs, including 2 softer interludes really have a different listening experience for me but all of them really feature an incredibly powerful bass line from Dave Jackson. That lead Devin Yuceil and Glen Hodgson to these incredibly carefully constructed guitar riffs that layer over a nice drum accompaniment by Blake Mostyn. Devin's vocals are smooth and he has a powerful range, knowing just when to strike that high note or settle into a lower tone that soothes over into the blending efforts. At some point in every song it just seems like the right combinations are being sprinkled in to unlock this rich sound that is vibrant and perfectly pitched, almost like a smooth jazz in theory.

WHY CHAMPION THIS ALBUM: This is the kind of album where you might find a song or two that defines a time, place, or moment for you, like that pivotal scene in a book or movie you remember so vividly. That's the power of Delta Sleep, it always has been actually and while I encourage going back and absorbing the entire discography, it's not going to take you long to realize the maturity that Spring Island brings and if you do it will resonate on a rotation of playlists for a long, long time.
