Beauty can sometimes be the flame that lights the dark Towering Pyre

TOWERING PYRE - 4 SONG EP

(DOOM/PROGRESSIVE METAL)

Morgan - Vocals/Bass

Lee - Guitars/Drums

So far this duo out of Charlotte, NC has only released 4 songs but now is the time to get to know them and get into them so I am going to talk about all of them as an EP of sorts.

WHAT THIS BAND DOES WELL: For a brand new band you expect a little rough around the edges, kind of trial and error let's find ourselves type songs for sure, but what Towering Pyre really gives you is well thought out, well engineered, kick you in the balls and run away type magic. Seriously the tempo changes are so amazing, so smooth, and nearly seamless that you really get into the music quickly and stay there for the ride. I love Morgan's ethereal melodicism especially on the very dark FADED LIFE and then the very nicely done transition into growls. I also love that these 4 songs are very different in many ways but that you really do get a sense of who Towering Pyre is and that they have their own definitive sound. To have that this early on is not just a glimpse at a very prosperous future but a testament to the carefulness and respect both Morgan and Lee have for being musicians and their prowess in their musicianship. All 4 songs are so rich and dauntingly dark lyric wise, there is a a lot to unpack if you really listen there and its poetic at times, its heartbreaking at others, and shivering all the same. A really great approach to convey a cohesiveness that brings a signature to a band starting out and yet show depth and growth all in the same. There is a great up tempo with a song like REST IN PEACE that settles into a very interesting progressive melody and just when you feel settled Lee rips a kick drum, double bass flare that blasts you into a darker wailing. Then you get a song like LOST AT SEA  that starts almost in ballad like tempo only to just reach up and rip your throat out with an awesome barrage of drums from Lee and growls from Morgan. Then you get this almost anthem like start to the very well put together STRESS RESPONSE that really shows a nice transition in it as well.  That is what I think really resonates with me here strongly is the just right amount of this or that, trying this but knowing this works kind of approach. They could have rested on the laurels of a strong effort like Faded Life, which has maybe one of the coolest tempo changes I have heard in a song this year, and just played that out but what Towering Pyre does is show all their cards and I am excited to see what's still hiding up their sleeves but in the meantime I will really enjoy these 4 tracks for quite a while.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHAMPION THIS BAND:
Like I said I could have waited to talk about them as they put more out there but really now is the time to really sink your teeth into Towering Pyre. They have a very nicely diverse 4 songs here. I think if you are a fan of stuff like At The Gates, Killswitch Engage, Satan (the band not the deity), Jinjer, and even a bit of Oceans of Slumber I think Towering Pyre is going to really be right up your alley. I think for my writer friends out there, a song like Faded Life especially might be a great background music for a darker scene you are battling through. Really though you are going to find that this is a band that really capture you, hold on to you, and surprise you all in one fail swoop.
