Part 1- Cat Quest

CAT QUEST II

When it comes to sequels in ANY medium, the original is often a hard act to follow and it’s anyone’s guess whether the follow-up will be any better than the original. With this lens in mind, we’ll be reviewing a couple of sequel video games to show what makes an OK sequel, a great sequel, and an Amazing sequel.

First up is Cat Quest 2, developed by the Gentlebros, this whimsical pun-flooded quirky RPG takes what worked for the first installment of the franchise and basically gives you more of the same. Some people might be bothered by this, others will love it.

It has that addictive quality of mobile games, with quite a bit more polish, countless kitty quips, and puppy puns, and overall is pretty enjoyable. It’s fun enough, though if you want something drastically different, then this might be a bit of a letdown

For a perfect example of what I’m talking about, check out screenshots from 1 and 2 and try and tell one from the other.

Gameplay works much the same way and can get plenty frantic except that now you can have co-op play. I will say difficulty ramped up quicker in the sequel and then leveled off sooner as well, so with a little bit of grinding and leveling up, you can pretty much tackle the game dying the minimum amount of times.

Why should you pick this game up?

If you played the original and loved it, there’s plenty more of that on offer. The gameplay is quick, progression is sometimes silly at how fast it can be (you can literally tackle 6 quests in less than 10-15 minutes), and the addition of another playable character can offer enough for you to want to check it out. But seriously, you’re here to play something lighthearted, and fun, and that’s not too demanding on you. Music, graphics, controls, everything feels as if it runs on the same engine and some people will be super happy with that. Me? I like risk-takers and love the learning curve of a new game. If you played the first installment, there is no curve. It’s a direct sequel and the word risk did not factor into any part of the development.

How much should you pay for it? I’m hard on team #BuyOnSale for this one. Not bad, but really think they didn’t push any sort of boundary, which makes me wonder if they know that there’s more than one way to skin a cat.  #SeeWhatIDidThere
