This was a nice, quick read and fun romp. Again, as I have said before, John Hartness knows his characters. Which especially rings true when it comes to Bubba and Quincy.

I love the subtle differences between Bubba and Quincy stories, in that it seems Bubba gets thrust into more trouble, whereas Quincy seems to cause more trouble. That does make a difference when reading these as well. There's built-in sympathy for Bubba, where Quincy has to earn it more. I like that they are friends too; each brings out something in the other.

This also has a lot more familiar lore that crosses over with other folks who have played in this world.  The lore is also more familiar in general, as well, and that helps us, the reader, not have to explore deep depths for what is being presented here. I appreciated that aspect.

The writing here is solid because it pushes us right into the crux of the action almost immediately, and it does so with the same snark I find charming in reading John Hartness books. Although I will say with Bubba stories, there seems to be a more tamer approach, or at least it feels like that, in those reads.

The unique aspect of this is what I mentioned in Reaper, the tonal shift doesn't project here, but the messaging that accompanied that plays a big role in what this book explores as it gets into the meat of the story. I love that. It is cool to see there's an evolution happening throughout all aspects of this world John has been so good at creating.

I love Ash in this story. He gets kind of thrown into the chaos, and it works to help him be like one of us, going on the journey through magical and mystical lands with creatures that would make our minds explode.

All in all, there is an underlying theme that resonates with the current climate here that speaks loudly, and it's very well done to be written within the confines of a fictional story that is still very much fun and action-packed.  I enjoyed it for what it was, what it's saying, and how it was written.
